2015 saw two high level delegations from Yantai visit San Diego to commemorate 30 years’ of sister city ties and further promote exchange and cooperation. The latter visit was in mid-November and led by Li Shuqin , Executive Vice-Chairwoman of the Yantai People’s Congress  Standing Committee. The 10-person delegation comprised of senior officials from Yantai’s People’s Congress Standing Committee, Bureau of Commerce, Foreign Affairs Office, and the Yantai Economic & Development Area.  They were welcomed with an evening banquet at Emerald Chinese Cuisine in which the delegation presented a video introduction to Yantai and its development.

The following morning, San Diego State University’s School of Hospitality & Tourism Management met with the group to discuss the development of the hospitality industry in Yantai and explore collaboration with Yantai’s universities and hotels. Afterwards, Mayor Kevin Faulkoner formally welcomed the delegation to San Diego and expressed his interest in seeing closer ties between the cities. Following the visit to the Mayor’s office, the delegation toured Qualcomm headquarters where they learned about the company’s history and development, its operations in China, and were given a peek into exciting, new commercial applications.

The afternoon was spent meeting with County Supervisor Ron Roberts, where the delegation learned about San Diego’s economic development and how certain key industries (e.g. biotech) took root in the region. The group ended their day with a visit and tour of Illumina, where they were introduced to its technology/products and discussed potential markets within Yantai municipality.

The Yantai government extended invitations to each of the San Diego organizations and leaders they met with in the hopes of furthering cooperation and exchange. SDYFS will continue to act as a bridge between the cities to encourage follow up and advancement in the collaborative areas explored during these visits.
