President’s Message

As the New Year begins, I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt greetings for a happy and prosperous New Year! The board of San Diego – Yantai Friendship Society is especially thankful for the engagement of our members and corporate sponsors.

With your support and involvement, you have enabled us to accomplish a lot in the last couple of years:

Following the success of the San Diego Symphony’s successful China Friendship Tour with performances in Yantai, Beijing and Shanghai in 2013, we co-sponsored and assisted with San Diego Youth Symphony’s triumphant 2015 summer concert tour in the same cities.

Several board members visited Yantai in 2013 in a strong showing of our commitment to forging deeper bonds of friendship with our sister city. We also had the opportunity to welcome two official Yantai delegations in October and November. In addition to local attractions, the November Yantai delegation me Kevin Faulconer, Mayor of San Diego and County Supervisor Ron Roberts, San Diego State University School of Hotel and Tourism Management faculty, SDYFS members and enjoyed a tour of Qualcomm and Illumina.

We would like to start 2016 by providing you with an unforgettable Chinese New Year celebration on Feb.21st 2016. We look forward to your continued participation and support.

See you at the banquet!

June Shillman

San Diego – Yantai Friendship Society (SDYFS) was instrumental in assisting the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) in celebrating its 70th anniversary with a successful concert tour in China. One hundred and eight (108) musicians (accompanied by 17 staff and video crew) performed in four concerts in Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall (June 27, 2015), San Diego’s sister city, Yantai’s Polygrand Theatre (June 29, 2015 and June 30, 2015) and the Oriental Arts Center in Shanghai (July 4, 2015).

In addition, the musicians toured China’s cultural attractions including Yantai’s beautiful beaches at Yangma Island, Yantai’s Children’s Palace, the Yantai Cultural Center, and the Yantai museum. Pre-college musicians studying at the Beijing Music Conservatory also treated the SDYS musicians to a concert of Chinese traditional instruments.
